Essential Job Duties

  • Documentation Review – Identify and resolve inconsistencies, ambiguities, or discrepancies that may lead to inaccurate coding or affect quality patient care.
  • Code Assignment – Accurately assign Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS); includes utilization of modifiers and units of service, and International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM) diagnoses codes based on medical record documentation for outpatient encounters; inpatient includes ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS)
  • System Utilization – Utilize THE Military Health System (MHS) Genesis systems to remotely access patient records and assign codes for patient encounters.
  • Productivity and Standards – Achieve and maintain hourly coding productivity and 97% accuracy standards for the position.

  • Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a biological science OR
  • University certificate in medical coding OR
  • Completion of a medical training program beyond apprentice level (e.g., medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training) offered by the Armed Forces or U.S. Maritime Service under professional medical supervision


Certifications

  • ONE or more of the following certifications through AAPC or AHIMA


Professional Coding Certifications

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician (CCS-P)


Evaluation & Management (E&M) Coding Certifications

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC)
  • National Alliance of Medical Auditing Specialists (NAMAS): Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor (CEMA)


Institutional Coding Certifications (Medical Coder II & III)

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)


Experience

  • 1 year of medical coding (Required)
  • DoD or Veterans Administration medical coding experience (Preferred)
  • MHS Genesis medical coding (Preferred)
